STRIKE Percussion Group

STRIKE came today - What an incredible show! We certainly have some very talented percussionists around! They entertained us with their high energy drumming for an hour with a wide variety of percussion skills on a drum kit, a tower of drums, wooden slit drums, the marimba, and.......fire!

Both Javarhn and Murray were selected to perform with the group (along with Mr Stewart and Mrs Pearl) - nice work you guys!

Visiting Scientists from ESR

We had 4 real live scientists in Room 4 today! They usually work at ESR but made a special trip out to show us their "Up the pipe solutions" programme

We were surprised that the scientists dont all wear lab coats and funny glasses. One had a protective suit on (forensic science), one had gumboots and a raincoat (field work), and one even just wore plain clothes (the boss and computer stuff!). These scientists all do very different jobs and all are very important jobs to each other.

We looked at what goes down the drain from our homes and how chemicals can get into our water ways. We also made environmentally friendly cleaning products as an alternative to chemicals.

We then learned how to make a cast of a footprint.
What an amazing time we had! Many thanks to Jacqui and her fab team!

Experimenting with Magnets

This week's science box from Mr Science was all about magnets. We learnt how there are 2 poles on a magnet - north and south. If you had one North up with another North pole they would repel, where as if you had a south pole up with a north pole they would attract.

We also found out that the world is one big magnet. There are the 2 poles at the bottom and top and that is why compasses work.

Balance

Mr Science sent us another science kit to try out.
We've been learning about balance and making balancing toys!

First we investigated ways we all balance. Then we got given each a template of a robot to colour in and cut out. We stuck these on card.
We tried balancing them but they just kept toppling over. That is until we added some weight to their legs. This pulled the centre of gravity down and after that they were easy to balance!

Fire Truck Visit

The 2 Fire Trucks from Tawa Fire Station came along to school today. We got to look over the trucks and find out a lot about the Tawa Volunteer Fire Brigade.

One of the many great teams of helpers in our Tawa community. Thanks guys!

Energy Transfer

We've been looking into Energy Transfer with large and small balls. We placed the small ball on top of the larger one and dropped them. They fell to the ground and all the energy that was going into the bounce of the large ball got transferred into the smaller ball, springing it way up in the air. The large ball hardly bounced at all. This sort of thing can happen when we bounce with a friend on the trampoline sometimes too!

Our fabulous Authors!

Here's a fun story that Ava wrote about our Principal, Mrs O'Leary, and her dog, Molly

Molly, Principal For The Day
One day Mrs O’Leary was sick. “Oh dear!” said Mrs O’Leary. “Who will take care of all the kids today?”
“Woof, woof!” said Molly. “I can do it.
“Great idea Molly.” said Mrs O’Leary. So she left a note on Molly’s leash and sent Molly down to school.
Jan saw the note and said “Hello”.
Molly went to sit in Mrs O’Leary’s chair. No one could understand what she was typing in because it said ‘scklybdjha’ (Dogs aren't the typing kind.)
When morning tea time came, Molly handed out Rimu awards but….they were all slobbery because they had been in her mouth! “Yuck!” said the children
After that, instead of doing Mrs O’Leary’s work, Molly got up to mischief. She dug a hole in the garden. She took wood for the playground. She got slobber all over the spider web too! And when she was hungry, she ate other kids sandwiches. She even messed up Mrs O’Leary’s office!
The next day, Mrs O’Leary was feeling much better.
When she came to school she as the garden, the playground, and the spider web. All the children were happy to see her.
And when she went into her office, Mrs O’Leary said “MOLLY!!!”

Super Duper Loopers!

Today we had a 16 visiting teachers come and see how we do Science in our class. They had fun with us as we made super duper loopers

The next day we investigated further into how these fly and what could we modify to make them fly better (or not so well!)

We tried 2 loops the same size but this just flew up and straight down. We tried with the big loop in the front, but it sank straight away. We tried with the 2 different sized loops close together, but think that there needed to be a longer gap for the air to blow through and help it lift.
We also tried 2 straws stuck together and 3 loops varying in size along the length. This flew well but not as long as our original design - too heavy maybe?
