RIMU Group's trip to a Wind Farm

What an absolutely stunning morning to visit the West Wind farm in Makara!! The sky was blue, the sun was shining and there was not a breath of a breeze to be seen.

The Rimu team were met by Carly from Meridian who talked to us about the West Wind farm, when it was established and the logistics of having the wind turbines transported and erected onsite.  The team inquired further by asking questions about how the turbines worked, how they made power, stored the power , distributed the power to households and of course, 'how the heck do people get to the top?'  Little did we know or expect that they would have elevators in them!  Great thinking designers!

After a fantastic talk given by Carly and great questions asked by the children we strolled through a forest loop track that gave us the most amazing views out over the south coast as well as the south Island. Again, we were so lucky to have had a beautiful calm day and a great bunch of parents who were able to come along to support.

A huge thank you to everyone who were able to give their time to support the groups passions and learning.

The sun turned up for a beautiful day with our Market Day.
Market Days are run by our Year 5/6 students and all money raised goes towards the Year 6 Camp. This is a long-standing tradition at our school, where the students plan, prepare, and run stalls - Young budding RIMU entrepreneurs practising Resilience, Integrity, Manaakitanga  and Unity!!

Many thanks for your support - We raised around $970!

Peace Flags for Nepal

We've made a huge Peace Flag Banner for the people of Nepal. Sophie Robbers (Mia's mum) worked with a group of children and dyed material for the flags. Once dried, everyone had an opportunity to write a message to encourage Nepalese after their massive earthquakes that they have recently had.

Thanks Sophie -What a fabulous way to practise our Manaakianga value!

Plastic Bottle Greenhouse

Over the last year we have been collecting plastic bottles for our greenhouse. The BNZ people came on their "Closed for Good" Day last year and cut them all up. Them Jamie, Lily, and Hunter's dad built a solid frame. Tawa ITM were a great help with giving us a discount on the wood.
Bunnings were awesome as well when they donated all the bamboo!

This weekend we managed to get the walls up. All we need to do now is reinforce the insides and prepare for planting in early spring.

A huge thanks to Sarah Opie for helping source resources (with discounts!) and to Scott Bilton for seeing this project through - you are awesome!!

LIGHT CHALLENGE

Knowledge attack - Did you know that a ball bouncing off the ground is similar to the way light reflects off objects?

Materials:
  • Ball
  • Mirrors
  • Torch

Procedure:
Part 1 - Outside on a flat surface
With a partner, grab a ball and bounce it between you and your partner. What do you notice about how the ball bounces? Do you notice that the ball is bouncing off the ground in the same angle that it hits the ground at?

Part 2 - Inside
Each student has a mirror
Arrange your students at desks in 2 rows
Give a torch to the students sitting in the first desk
Turn off the lights.
Challenge the teams to adjust their mirrors so that the light from the flashlight reflects off everyone’s mirror on the team and reaches the last person in the row, as shown.

Bubbles!

We looked at how light splits on the surface of a bubble - you can get a rainbow of colours. We also tried to catch bubbles, mould bubbles, mount bubbles, and measure the diameter of a popped bubble. What fun!

MMs and Chromatography

We put 6 different mms on a plate – not touching. Then we added a drop of water on each one – to get colour off each mm. (A tricky process)
While that was happening we prepared our filter paper by sticking it to a stick and putting a starting line on it 2cm up.
Next we used a toothpick to put an extract of colour from mms onto starting line and used the Air to dry colours on paper
We put a bit of water in the bottom of a glass and then place our paper into water
We watched the paper absorb the water and take the colour up the paper
