Super Cold Bag with Science Visitors

We had special visitors today come and see how we 'do science'. These visitors are teachers who are on a Science Leadership course with the Royal Society. They are from all over New Zealand.

The experiment we did today had a fantastic chemical reaction - one that none of us guessed would happen. The photos tell a bit of the story.

Try this at home - here's what to do:-
Materials:
 · Citric Acid
 · Baking Soda
· Tap Water
· Zip lock bag (15cm x 10cm)
· Measuring cup
 · Plastic teaspoon

Perform this experiment over a kitchen sink or outside. There is a small chance the zip lock bag will burst making a wet mess!
What to do:-
Put one level teaspoon of citric acid in a zip lock bag
Put one teaspoon of baking soda in the same zip lock bag. And shake the bag gently to mix the two chemicals.
Fill up the measuring cup with cold tap water (about 30ml).
Carefully place the water in the bag and zip the bag shut.
Tip the cup over in the sealed bag and watch! Not only does the bag blow up, it also becomes super cold! So don’t forget to feel its temperature.

What’s happening and why: Mixing citric acid, baking soda and water together causes a chemical reaction. The new chemical that is made is carbon dioxide gas. This gas fills the bag and causes it to blow up. You’ll also notice the bag drops in temperature as part of the chemical reaction.

Spelling City

Want some variety in learning spelling words at home? Spelling City is a fun way to help the kids learn - and it's free! All you need to do is type the weekly word list in and there are a number of 'games' that can be played to help get more familiar with spelling them.

Jack Flash and the Jumping Bean Stalk

A Shared -writing review by Room 4.

On Friday 24 July we were entertained by NZ Playhouse.

Three funny and clever actors kept us laughing and enjoying their show for about an hour.

The story they told us was a version of Jack and the Beanstalk. The problem was the Giant (who wasnt really a giant) dropped his rubbish off his cloud and onto the land, dirtying the environment and hurting people. Jack solved the problem by using a Mexican Jumping Bean Stalk to climb up to the clouds and tell the Giant that (1st) he wasn't really a giant and (2nd) to use the 3 R's - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
We thought the show was cool. It made adults and kids laugh. It had funny songs and ridiculous dancing. The actors used funny voices and singing.
We learnt that the costumes use Velcro for  quick changes and the sets change easily having pictures on both sides.
The overall message of recycling was a great message and it fits with our RIMU value of being Manaakitanga.
We hope loads of other schools get to see this show - it was fantastic!

Something in the Air

Here's a fun experiment we did this week you could try at home. All you need is

 • Hair dryer • A Ping pong ball • A polystyrene ball

What to do:
 1. Set the hair dryer to cool, switch it on, and point it at the ceiling.
2. Carefully put the ping-pong ball in the stream of air. Hold the hair dryer very steady and watch as the ping-pong ball floats in the stream of air.
3. Carefully move the hair dryer from left to right and watch how the ball moves as well, staying in the stream of air.
4. Try floating the balloon over your ping-pong ball.
5. Try to float the polystyrene ball in the same air stream as the ping pong ball. How do they behave when there is more than one?
